Back Ground Thatcher Home in Fort Beaufort
The Thatcher Home is a registered Non-Profit Organization, NPO Registration Number: 005-995, in terms of the Companies Act, Act 71 of 2008. The home is located in Fort Beaufort, this historic town is located in the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipal area that further falls into the Amathole District Jurisdiction, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is further licensed by the Department of Social Welfare, a statutory structure/department of the South African Government.
The town Fort Beaufort actually started as a mission station started by Rev Joseph Williams of the London Missionary Society in 1816. In 1822 it became a military fort, and in 1837 it was named Fort Beaufort in honour of the Duke of Beaufort, father of Lord Charles Henry Somerset, the first British Governor of the Cape Colony. The town and surrounding area played a prominent role in the Frontier Wars (1834 – 1853).
Today, Fort Beaufort is situated in between the following cities Port Elizabeth and East London. The immidiate surrounding towns are Alice, Adelaide,Grahamstown and King Williams Town. Fort Beaufort is known for a thriving citrus and game farming community. It is also enriched by its traditions by also being surrounded by many Xhosa villages that also attrack tourism.
The Thatcher Home caters for the retired elderly and frail, as a cheaper option, understanding the limitations of a town as to a similair retirement home that are located in major centres.
